From its beginnings in a drafty farm house in Wyong, Kamira Drug and Alcohol Treatment Service is now a residential treatment program in a beautiful setting with state-of-art facilities for women and their children to heal.
Catherine Hewett is the CEO of Kamira and we were very lucky to have Catherine as our guest this morning. We were inspired by Cate’s words of hope and perseverance. Kamira has grown from a small $160,000 per year program to now $2.5 million per year.
The Kamira program generally run for 5-7 months residentially. Over the last 12 months there were 33 women in treatment with 542 requests for service. This represents a tremendous shortfall in funding to offer services to this life changing program.
Cate carefully explained the concept of intergenerational trauma. She spoke about the extraordinary, evidenced based approaches used at Kamira to overcome trauma and the therapeutic approaches used to heal, create attachment between mothers and their children and develop trusting relationships.
Cate has a number of connections with our club; lifelong friendship with Peter Whitney including Peter’s support of Kamira through Bambi, Peter Clarke looks after the Kamira webpage and does graphic design work, Anne Charlton is on the Board of Kamira and Mick Goodwin supports technology.
It was an honour to spend an hour with Catherine Hewett. Kamira’s future is in safe hands with Cate at the helm.
