Speaker David Murphy - Paramedic

Anne Charlton • August 25, 2021

Being a Paramedic in Todays Frontline Healthcare is all in a days work for David Murphy

This morning we were incredibly lucky to have the remarkably busy David Murphy, former RYLA Director and current Central Coast Paramedic visit our club.

From a beginning in the IT industry working for companies such as Apple and Dell, David decided on a sea change and joined NSW Ambulance in 2007 as a Paramedic. Since that time, he has continued in his studies and has become qualified in Intensive Care and Extended Care as well as completing a bachelor's degree.

David has volunteered with St John Ambulance for over 25 years and is a Volunteer Rescue Operator with the Central Coast Rescue Squad, providing rescue services to the Wyong area and surrounds.

David spoke with great enthusiasm about his experience with RYLA.  David attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards in 2003 and subsequently became a RYLA facilitator.  David shared the life changing opportunities RYLA presents to young people and how he was positively influenced and mentored by Rotarian leaders such as Les Watson and our own Harold Sharp.

David was selected to be the Director of the RYLA program for Sydney North and the Central Coast for 3 years and as a Rotarian attended International RYLA in Sweden during the International Rotary Convention in Copenhagen, Denmark.

David clearly loves his job as a paramedic and is driven to help people. He shared that he has delivered 11 babies so far during his career and as part of his Extended Care duties keeps countless people out of hospital by providing exemplary primary care in their homes; keeping people safe and well is David’s passion.  We discussed the role frontline emergency workers such as paramedics and police have played through recent times with COVID-19.

David told us that his job is just like any other, he is trained to provide a service and he and his colleagues carry out their duties to the best of their abilities. On this point we will have to disagree, we believe that David’s job is like no other.  He and his colleagues face many challenges, require enormous skills, emotional intelligence and focus.  We thank and acknowledge David and all paramedics globally for their determination and endurance to provide frontline emergency care throughout a global pandemic and all that they do! We look forward to seeing David in person when we can meet face to face after lockdown.
